Windows Phone 7 delays down to manufacturers

Posted on:

Microsoft claims handset manufacturers are partly to blame for Windows Phone 7 update delays.  Microsoft explained the delay in updating its new phone software yesterday, partly blaming handset manufacturers for the problem.

Windows Phone 7, launched last October as Microsoft’s attempted to catch up with Apple and Google in the smartphone market, was well received but criticised for lack of some basic functions – such as cut and paste.

Microsoft initially said an update to the software would be available early in 2011, but many users are still without it.  “We had expected it to be earlier than now,” Joe Belfiore, head of Microsoft’s Windows phone program, said at a software developer conference in Las Vegas on yesterday.

Belfiore said the company had started the update, but ran into problems on some newly manufactured phones that would not function properly afterwards.  He did not name any manufacturers involved. Samsung, HTC and LG are the main handset makers of Windows phones.

Once the company found the problems, it overhauled its update procedure, said Belfiore.  “We felt it would be better to be a little bit patient, make sure that when we get updates out that they would happen reliably, and unfortunately that caused a delay in getting things out,” he said.

Belfiore said he was now “optimistic” that there will not be similar problems with future updates. A more comprehensive update, code-named Mango, will be available later this year, he said.

Microsoft still has only a four per cent share of the worldwide smartphone software market, according to research firm Gartner, but it is expected to be a major player once its deal to provide the operating system for leading handset maker Nokia takes effect.

A Nokia developer onstage at the Las Vegas conference said there was still no date for when the new Microsoft-powered phones will hit the market.

HTC has launched a fanfare of new devices at Mobile World Congress – Perfect for WorkMobile™

HTC has unveiled a number of new devices – including its first ever tablet – here in Barcelona.

Peter Chou, the company’s chief executive, took to the stage to unveil the tablet and five new smartphones, claiming HTC was “providing different choices [with] the broadest range of phones we have ever announced at one time.”

HTC Flyer

The biggest announcement came in the form of the HTC Flyer, the company’s premier tablet device (pictured).   The seven inch device runs on a re-worked version of Google’s Android 2.3 mobile operating system in order to incorporate HTC’s Sense user interface, which has been tweaked for tablet use.

It contains a 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor, 32GB of internal storage and 1GB of RAM. There is a front facing 1.3 megapixel camera for video calling, along with a back-mounted five megapixel camera with autofocus.  HTC also updated a number of its flagship devices to incorporate enhanced functionality and a few new features.

Desire S

The Desire S comes with a 3.7in touch screen and is moulded from a single piece of aluminium.   The device is loaded with Qualcomm’s latest 1GHz SnapDragon processor and will run on Google’s gingerbread operating system, along with an updated HTC Sense UI.

There’s also a front facing camera to accompany the back-mounted five megapixel one, enabling video calling from the handset.   HTC has also upped the internal storage, a big drawback of the original Desire handset, to 1.1GB.

Incredible S

The Incredible S has a more artistic design, which its makers claim means it “looked like it had been dipped in paint.”  A four inch super LCD screen and surround sound enables users to watch HD quality video on the move. It also comes with an eight megapixel camera so you can shoot your own HD videos and pictures too.

Again, it features a 1GHz processor, 1.1GB of internal storage and runs on Android Gingerbread, but offers a different feel to the Desire design.

HTC Desire 2 rumoured for MWC

HTC could reveal a successor to its popular HTC Desire handset at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week.  A German blog claims to have obtained a snap of Vodafone Germany’s internal inventory system which appears to list the device under the name “Desire 2 HTC”.

That’s about it for details on the device, but it’s interesting to speculate on what shape the Desire 2 will take (if the report is genuine). Unlike the original device, which closely resembled the Google-approved but HTC-built Nexus One, there’s no self-built official handset to replicate this time. The Nexus One’s recently released follow-up, the Nexus S, is made by Samsung.

Of course, HTC has already proved willing to experiment with the Desire brand, having produced the hugely impressive (and just plain huge) Desire HD as well as the physical Qwerty keyboard-sporting Desire Z. Indeed, the Desire 2 could simply be a European rebranding of one of the devices showcased at the CES event in January.

Whatever happens, HTC will be out to impress with its next-generation Desire 2 – whatever form it takes.  So it looks like next week will be really great, with many big launches at the Mobile World Congress, and we are looking forward to showcasing WorkMobile™ at the very hub of the excitement!
