WorkMobile helping businesses to prosper in 2011. . . .

Posted on:

As usual, this year was a big one for the mobile market, but you could say that WorkMobile has been working harder than most, heading towards the stratosphere as a fast-growing business phenomenon.

Since its launch in September, WorkMobile has been adopted by many sectors and used in many ways to maximize business productivity and eliminate paper forms.  And it just keeps getting better; the next release in the New Year will include job scheduling.  This will make WorkMobile an even more appealing offering for businesses making the transition to mobile working.

Faster 3G in the not too distant future…

Nokia Siemens Networks and T-Mobile are teaming up to bring a new technology to life which, called Long Term HSPA Evolution (LTHE), could offer speeds of more than 650 Mbits/s, nearly reaching the 1Gbit/s peak.

Today’s HSPA+ speeds are around 40Mbps but once commercially available in 2013, LTHE will offer superior data speed outpacing 4G technology.  The standard has already been approved with the occasion of this week’s 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) RAN plenary meeting.  Long term HSPA Evolution might still be at least two years away from deploying but Nokia Siemens is already using high speeds offered by the technology and once it will operate in 2013, T-Mobile will be the first to run it, but an exclusivity is so far undisclosed.

This is great news for businesses adopting mobile business applications such as WorkMobile, as data downloads involving data capture and job scheduling will be even quicker, leading to more efficient productivity.

75 Billion apps to be downloaded by 2014 . . .

The worldwide market for leisure and business mobile applications is set to exceed £22 billion by 2014, say analysts IDC.  Application downloads are expected to reach 76.9 billion a year, up from 10.9 billion a year today.  The apps market is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 60 per cent.

So far, application developers have written more than 300,000 apps for devices such as the iPhone and Android handsets.  App subject matter is mind-blowingly broad, from recipe and cooking hints to software that turns a smartphone into a torch, through to enterprise applications including data capture and job scheduling like WorkMobile.

Business innovation not entirely hindered by slow broadband

UK businesses blame slow broadband speeds for impeding the growth of the UK economy by stifling innovative working practices, according to research from a wholesale broadband provider.

The research showed that one in three businesses couldn’t support new collaborative working applications as well as limiting companies’ access to cloud-based services.  Nearly three quarters of the respondents believe that more reliable and faster broadband would improve business competitiveness.

However, such difficulties with connection or low bandwidth need not hinder WorkMobile users, as store and-and-forward technology is integral to the solution, making this problem a minor hindrance for many businesses still looking to the internet for innovation.

AVG Technologies has announced the acquisition of DroidSecurity, a company that provides security software for Android smartphones and tablets.

Downloads of DroidSecurity’s mobile security application passed 4.5 million during October, and AVG claimed that the purchase will extend its security offerings to millions of consumers and small businesses.

With smartphone use currently blossoming within many businesses for activities such as data capture, emailing and job scheduling, security is an issue that really needs to be addressed.

This looks to be a smart move for AVG as Android is the fastest growing platform, and as so many SMEs are moving what they do to the mobile space, this area is set for huge growth.

The purchase could prove timely after MWR InfoSecurity discovered flaws in an HTC smartphone running on Android that allows it to be hacked and turned into a bugging device. MWR has already warned that the Palm Pre could be affected in a similar way.
